Building Relationships Through Sponsorship

When many of us think of missions, we often picture going overseas, learning a new language and culture, or sharing the Gospel in unfamiliar places. But the reality is that missions begins much closer to home. Every time you pray for your sponsor child, write a letter, or share an encouraging word with a local pastor, you’re joining in that same Kingdom work. You’re sharing Christ’s love right where you are.
At HanHee Kim World Mission Center, we often remind our sponsors that the Children of Jesus, Riverside Tree, and Raven of Love programs are not just about providing school supplies, scholarships, or financial support. They’re about relationships. The kind that reflects God’s heart for His people. Writing and receiving letters are one of the most tangible ways to build those relationships.

One of our longtime sponsors, now an elderly member, uses every letter she writes to her sponsor children as an opportunity to share the Gospel. She faithfully reminds them of God’s love and often asks if they have the assurance of salvation. Through her heartfelt words, she plants eternal seeds in their hearts and entrust God to grow them.
Another sponsor, who supports a Riverside Tree student, writes back and forth like pen pals. They share updates about their daily lives, the ups and the downs, about family, school, and faith. What started as sponsorship has blossomed into genuine friendship that is rooted in the shared joy of knowing Christ.

These are just a few of the many stories that remind us at HHK WMC that sponsorship is more than just support. It’s partnership. It’s the unity that comes when believers, regardless of race, age, nation, or language, encourage one another in the Gospel.
If you haven’t written to your sponsor child, student, or pastor recently, we encourage you to start today. A simple letter can speak volumes, reminding them that they are seen, remembered, loved, and prayed for. To make this process easier, we’ve launched a new online letter submission system where you can write and send messages directly. Visit coj.org/write to share a note of encouragement and join in the missionary work God is doing through you!
