In a world often marked by distance and disconnection, the Riverside Tree Ministry is planting something deeper—relationships rooted in love, prayer, and transformation. While financial support provides essential help, the real impact of a sponsor goes far beyond economics. It’s about connection. It’s about care. It’s about one person saying to another, across continents and cultures: You are not alone.
Take this abridged letter from Sharon, a college student in Peru currently in the Riverside Tree program, whose sponsor lives in Colorado:
“Dear Sponsor,
This month has been full of emotions—joy, sadness, and worry—especially with everything happening at university. At church, we celebrated Mother’s Day, but it didn’t go as planned. Our young adult group wanted to organize it, but another group was assigned. Still, when they didn’t show up, we jumped in. We became ushers, cooks, photographers—everything! Even with the stress of having no water to cook, we laughed through it. It turned out to be a special moment of unity.
At school, one of my favorite courses became very difficult. A misunderstanding in my group led to some classmates writing negative things about our professor, which someone then sent directly to her. I wasn’t involved, but I felt terrible and even apologized. It really made me reflect. I realized I haven’t always made the best choices or put in my best effort. But I’m learning. I’m asking more questions, being more disciplined, and trying to live out my faith through my actions—like my leader says, “Practice what you preach.”
