Carrying Others’ Burdens

Would you be able to tell your entire life story to someone you have never met? It would take a lot of trust, right? One of the encouraging things we have witnessed in the COJ ministry was seeing relationships between sponsors and children who were struggling with their lives blossom. More than ever, sponsors have been intentional in communicating with their children, checking in to make sure they are doing well physically and spiritually. And the response on the part of the children? Truly amazing! They have opened up to their sponsors in their letters, sharing stories of their lives, including details of trials they face as well as joyous experiences; they are unleashing their creativity into designing and drawing their own letter paper. “Though I have not seen him, my heart knows him well.” This is a line I like in a praise song called Soon by Hillsong. Though we have not seen God with our physical eyes, we accepted His invitation into a real and intimate relationship with Him, having been moved by His great and incomparable love. In the same way, I believe the genuine care and love displayed by how you, the sponsors, carry the burdens of the children, as our Lord commanded, has opened up their hearts and uplifted their spirits. We give thanks and glory to God for you!

Father to the Orphans

Mom. Dad. Such simple words, yet they carry tremendous significance. Many of us have taken being able to say these two words for granted. Amongst our COJ partner churches, there are children who have grown up without having such a privilege and some of them faced extra challenges during this current pandemic. God has charged his church to look after those in need, especially the orphans. It is only through the generous giving of faithful sponsors and partners in the ministry that we are able to continue helping children like Bertha, Estani, Baymar and Taylor and express to them His heart– that He is their Abba daddy who is always with them and loves them so dearly. How great our Heavenly Father is! Thank you for being the channel of His love to these children!

I Am A Church Member!

A foundational part of the Riverside Tree ministry is the continual spiritual growth of students as they work to complete their degrees. The students, who study in different regions throughout Peru, meet virtually for a time of praise, prayer, fellowship, and discipleship throughout the year. There is a common saying that goes “big things come in small packages”. From last August to January, we went through a book called I Am a Church Member together; many were transformed by the mighty truths shared in this tiny book, written by Thom Rainer. It is an excellent prescription for a condition spreading rapidly throughout local churches in the past 30 years - a self-centered mindset. Believers throughout the world struggle with understanding church membership in its Biblical context; the unfortunate outcome of this is the lack of a most necessary appreciation for the family of God and the joy and satisfaction that comes from being a part of the body. This study has greatly helped the Riverside Tree students gain a Biblical understanding and correct perspective on church membership. They are better equipped to help other members at their own local churches to cherish membership as God intended. While students are working towards their professional careers, the development of a strong, grounded relationship with Father God is essential. We’d like to ask for your ongoing encouragement and prayers for the Riverside Tree students to be firmly planted in the faith as a tree in well-watered ground.

Faith BIGGER than COVID

God is our ever present hope and shelter. In the midst of the uncertain times, Iglesia Jesús Esperanza de Vida (Jesus, Hope of Life Church) has continued to be a place of refuge and peace for the children and youth in a Guayaquil city community, allowing them rest from the harsh realities they face day-to-day. With more than 60 children and youth gathering at the church, Sister Carmen had to split them into two groups to accommodate for social distancing. Just two years after building a new church building, we are praying to be able to build an extension or a second floor. Please pray with us as we seek God’s direction in this matter and continue to lift up Sister Carmen who is continually moving forward with faith bigger than COVID- for God to fill her with His Spirit always and grant her strength and good health.

Unstoppable Faith

After nine months of being away from school, children in India, including those at the Amazing Grace orphanage finally returned to school in January. Though the children were tutored at the home, they were ready to go back to school. However, the school systems now face the challenge of trying to fit an entire year’s worth of curriculum into five months. The Bible students are also resuming their studies and ministries after several months of staying home and Pastor Abraham’s church services have been continuing since October. For Pastor Abraham, his work never ceased. Twice a day, he gathered the children for prayer. He brought spiritual revival and encouragement to many local villages and led many to be baptized in the Lord’s name. Even now, his schedule is packed throughout the month of March with outreach events. Despite the looming possibility of a second wave of coronavirus, he is neither afraid nor discouraged but moving onward for the gospel of Jesus Christ. Pastor Abraham and his family have an unsinkable hope. A bottomless joy. An unmovable faith that springs from the depths of a great love for their mighty and great Savior. Pastor Abraham is not focused on the trials or challenges but on the lovely One who is in the midst of it all. He has faith in God. Thank you, dear sponsors, for your continued prayers, encouragement, and support for Pastor Abraham. Due to your faithful support, many lost souls in India are finding their eternal resting place in God’s presence through faith in Jesus Christ! Hallelujah!

Faithfulness of God

Tragic news came in the beginning of 2021 to Pastor Patricio Granada in Ancahuasi – Cusco. His daughter Ester, son-in-law Fredy, their two children David and Isaac, and two nephews Abraham and Abdiel had been on their way to Puerto Maldonado for a family trip. No one could have ever predicted that a car accident, in a single moment, would take three lives - Ester, Fredy and Abraham - and leave two of the three surviving severely injured; David fractured his skull and Abdiel broke his leg. Although Pastor Patricio and his wife Beatriz felt like they were in a nightmare they could not wake up from, they placed their faith in God and quickly gathered courage and strength to care for their grandchildren. Friends and community members encouraged Pastor Patricio and his family to raise funds through a food bazaar. Their goal was to sell 2,000 plates for 10.00 soles each (equivalent to about 2.70 USD) to cover for his grandchildren’s medical expenses. Upon hearing the news, pastors from all over Peru in ABBA, COJ, and ROL ministries and sponsors here in the States rallied together as one family. We collectively gathered a love offering to cover double their goal - 4,000 plates. Despite financial challenges from the pandemic, our family in Christ could not hold back from showing God’s love to a fellow brother who was in greater need. Pastor Patricio’s faith has not been wavering. He has a steadfast belief in God’s goodness. And our God responded to him with His amazing faithfulness. We ask for your continual prayers for Pastor Patricio’s family’s situation, as they seek wisdom on handling legal matters in the aftermath and for full recovery of Abdiel and David’s injuries.

Fruits of Riverside Tree!

2020 has been quite a year of twists and turns for us at the HHK WMC. At the beginning of each year, we usually ask for the Lord to lay upon our hearts a word or theme that would summarize what He had in store for us for the year. For me, it was the word UNITY. At the time, I thought it was speaking to establishing stronger connections with my peers and family. But as weeks passed by, there was a sense that the Lord was going to work within the Riverside Tree (RT) ministry to build stronger relationships. By late September, the RT students had been away from their studies for several months. We thought it would be a great time for them to take time to help in their homes and churches. But after a few meetings with the students, we felt in our spirits that this time apart from school had not been encouraging, but rather quite devastating for their spiritual walks. I have to confess that I was not very understanding at first. But the Scripture the Lord led me to was Hebrews 10:25: “Not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.” The RT ministry started in 2009 with a three-fold ministry focus to help high school graduates: 1. With scholarships so they may pursue the passion God has placed in their hearts 2. Who inspired to become pastors 3. To become leaders and deliverers of the Good News in their spheres of influence Looking back over the years, all three of those areas are still a foundational part of this ministry. We have helped over 22 men and women graduate and enter professional careers. We are being used to raise up and encourage several men and women to become mighty spiritual leaders in their churches. And we are seeing graduates bring the Good News of Jesus Christ to their coworkers and neighbors. We are completing what the Lord has tasked us with. During the past year, the shift to Zoom meetings have provided a platform where RT students can become united and build relationships as they meet together for a time of praise, fellowship, study, and prayer. In between these meetings they can also meet with their sponsors and the staff here in Denver, Colorado. 2020 has been such a blessed adventure with new changes and even though we let go of so much because of the circumstances, the new experiences and deepened fellowships that have enriched the ministry 100-fold. For this we are truly grateful. At the start of 2021, two new students have been added to the RT ministry and they are in need of caring sponsors who can help support and encourage them as they start their college journey. If you are moved to help one of these two upcoming students, please call our office or email us at sponsor@coj.org!

Vision for 2021

These are excepts from letters from pastors in Peru Every trial is an opportunity for God to manifest himself and I believe He always does. My agenda for this year is to work with families of the children in Sunday school, COJ, and church families. As I prayed and meditated about the agenda for 2021 I fell asleep, and God spoke to me in my dream that I should also distribute brochures at the airport and hospitals. This is something that God has strongly placed in my heart. God speaks to us in funny ways. The challenge for 2021 is to dedicate ourselves to pray, fast, and evangelize more. So I ask for prayers for strength, dear sponsor. -Pastor Artemio Rivera, LIMA We have the opportunity to prepare our hearts for the day we will encounter our beloved Jesus Christ, through prayer and fasting. He is the eternal life for his children. The task of preaching the gospel of salvation is urgent. As a church, our prayer for this year is to restore the different ministries within our church, which have been affected by the state of emergency from the pandemic. We have only been able to gather with the adults. I thank God that our family is doing well. I am grateful to God and also grateful for your help and prayers. Thank you so much for everything. -Pastor Reyes Perez, SATIPO First, I give thanks to the Lord. I also thank you for your prayers for me and for the monthly offerings throughout past year. May the Lord repay you abundantly. All I can do for you is to pray for you. In 2021, I will keep on working in accordance to the Lord’s calling, despite this pandemic, by trusting in Him and His help. This year’s challenge is to keep on working with the children and young people by teaching them the Word of God. -Pastor Patricio Granada, CUSCO

Light in the Darkness

We never cease to be in awe of how God works. During the Christmas season, one of the COJ sponsors was inspired by Holy Spirit to provide food baskets not only for the children she sponsors, but all the members of an entire COJ partner church. She hoped to share the love and grace of Jesus that is always abundant and fills our every need. Cathedral of Life church is located within a community in the city of Piura, with a high crime rate and lots of single mother families. The pastor and his family prepared food baskets to provide every family in the church and were even able to hand some out to neighbors in their community and shine the light of Jesus to those living in darkness around them. It was truly like the miracle of the 5 loaves and 2 fish. We praise the Lord for His people with willing spirits to be used and respond to His call, through whom we experience the blessing of witnessing God’s great work unfold in our midst!

For His Sheep…

God’s grace is overflowing even during this pandemic. We had not been able to see the Raven of Love pastors face-to-face in a long time, but this year, through Zoom, we were able to gather to celebrate Christ’s birth! We sang songs of joy and shared our thanksgiving unto the Lord for all He had done in 2020. We remembered that God never stops working. He is always with us, no matter the circumstance or situation we are in, and holds us closely in His arms. For most of the pastors, they were able to see the faces of their sponsors for the first time through a video Christmas greeting recording, and were very encouraged. It is by God’s grace and your continuous support these pastors have held steadfast to the Lord as they continue in ministry. You are the ravens that God has called to provide for his anointed servants, so they may continue to work more diligently for His sheep and to reach a lost world. We cannot thank you enough for what you are doing in the lives of these pastors as they continue to expand His kingdom here on earth. May our Lord abundantly bless you in the new year with His peace and joy!
